Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt to Resume Talks Over the Implementation of the IPoE Recommendations

Ambassador Dina Mufti, Ministry for Foreign Affairs Spokesperson said Tuesday that Egypt had officially asked for the resumption of the tripartite talks with Ethiopia and Sudan on the use of the Nile waters.

Briefing journalists on Tuesday, Ambassador Dina said the talks would resume on the basis of the 7 points agreed between Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi recently in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. One of the areas to be discussed will be the resumption of the activities of the tripartite technical committee tasked with the implementation of the recommendation of the International Panel of Experts (IPoE).

The committee’s activities were suspended in January, and according to Fekahmed Negash, the committee will “pick up where it left off to discuss the formation of a committee for conducting two proposed studies.” These involve a hydrology simulation model and a trans-boundary social, economic and environmental impact assessment. He said the “committee will comprise members drawn from all the three countries… who will select contractors to conduct the two studies.”
